What are some of the biggest lessons you've learned throughout your business journey?
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned throughout my business journey is to start with a great plan that’s well-researched, well-thought-out, and has the best intentions. But the moment something is not working, don’t get stuck in defeat or discouragement; be flexible and shift gears to get to the next step. In building out the bookmark charm bar section of my store, I wanted particular installations to be complete before my Grand Opening. However, it was not possible to complete it before then. So, I chose to move on to plan b, and since the time that we've have opened, customers have expressed that it is one of their favorite sections. They had no idea of what my original plans were for that area, and they still love it.
I’ve learned that everything I originally planned doesn’t always have to happen the way I imagined, but it can still be just as great. Sometimes, we have to readjust our perspective and timing.
What is the most important piece of advice you would give to your younger self?
As a child, I had a list of goals and things I wanted to achieve, including becoming a doctor, owning a bookstore, and much more. Because I had so many things I wanted to accomplish at such an early age, I sometimes felt the pressure to be perfect and add more goals once I achieved the current one.
I would tell my younger self not to get stuck in the future trying to create the perfect adult I wanted to be. I would tell myself to just be a child and explore and enjoy what’s happening around me now.
What advice would you give to other women entrepreneurs who are seeking to build successful businesses?
First, it's important to learn the process of creating a business within your city. When I opened A Better Today Books & Boutique, I learned that multiple licenses, permits, and certifications were required. The process for some of the paperwork can be lengthy, so plan ahead and then add more time for possible delays.
When I speak at conferences, I always tell women it’s important to ask the questions that are on their hearts. Sometimes, we hold back, and because of that, we don’t get the advice or support we need. Don’t overthink things; don’t think for others or assume you know what they will say. For example, instead of asking how to find a supplier, ask instead, “Will you give me three suppliers that you have enjoyed working with?”
As women, we’re nurturers and find comfort in knowing we’ve helped someone. Give other women the opportunity to support you.
How do you maintain a strong sense of self and prioritize your well-being while navigating the demands of entrepreneurship, marriage, and motherhood?
My faith is my foundation. Out of all the books I’ve read and love, books that spiritually encourage me have been by far my favorite. Books such as the Bible and books that focus on soul care strengthen me from the inside out. When you are homed in on your values, planning your calendar gets easier. Having a spiritual intention for your day, week, or month can help cut out unnecessary projects and tasks. After that, being organized makes a big difference. Even if you plan for the next day, the night before sets you up for victory.
I also read self-help books for inspirational messages and practical advice. Taking time to read is one of the best ways to prioritize and pour into yourself.
What is your vision for the future of your business, and how will it continue to make a positive impact on the world?
My vision is to be known as a unique, serene, and whimsical bookstore that encourages people to create more reading moments. When customers leave my store, I want them to feel inspired, informed,
We want to be a place for people who love bookstores to come and connect with other readers, and we want to be a place for people who do not normally frequent bookstores to come to the events for the inspiration of reading more.
