Meet: Sylvia Dennis-Wray!

A Journey of Resilience, Leadership, and Advocacy

Sylvia Dennis-Wray, originally from Perry, Georgia, and raised in Linden, New Jersey, has lived a life defined by purpose, perseverance, and compassion. Her remarkable journey, from corporate professional to entrepreneur and community advocate, has touched the lives of many and continues to inspire those around her.

From Corporate Success to Entrepreneurial Vision

Sylvia’s career began in the corporate world, where she quickly established herself as a dedicated and results-driven professional. She held pivotal positions with major corporations such as Schering-Plough Healthcare, Johnson & Johnson, and Luxottica, gaining valuable experience in leadership, marketing, and business development.

In 2005, Sylvia’s life took a transformative turn when she returned to her Georgia roots. Fueled by an entrepreneurial spirit and a vision to create something meaningful, she and her husband, Orville “Scottie” Wray, opened a restaurant business that became a cornerstone in their local community. Their venture not only reflected their love of culture and cuisine but also their deep commitment to giving back.

A Deeper Purpose: Advocacy Through Adversity

Sylvia’s personal and professional paths intertwined in a profound way when her mother, Ruby Dennis, suffered a ruptured brain aneurysm. Without hesitation, Sylvia embraced the role of caregiver, standing by her mother through recovery and the challenges that followed. In 2006, Ruby underwent another brain surgery, which resulted in dementia—a life-changing event that strengthened Sylvia’s resolve to advocate for those affected by the disease.

That same year, despite personal trials, Sylvia and her husband opened Sands Island Bar & Grill in downtown McDonough and launched the McDonough Jerk Festival, celebrating Caribbean culture and community unity. Through these endeavors, they became pillars in their local area, bringing people together through food, music, and purpose.

Championing Change and Empowering Others

Sylvia’s commitment to the cause of Alzheimer’s and dementia awareness deepened through her participation in “The Walk to End Alzheimer’s.” Her advocacy has since expanded nationally, earning her invitations to Washington, D.C., where she joined other advocates in raising awareness and pushing for better resources for families impacted by dementia.

In addition to her advocacy work, Sylvia is the CEO and owner of SDW Marketing Firm, Sylvia D. Wray “The Advocate”, and SDW Bling Boutique. She is also the Co-Founder of the McDonough Jerk Festival and an active Leader in the Southern Crescent Women in Business Chapter. Her firm, SDW Marketing, proudly partners with Holy Connection TV, extending her influence into media and community engagement.

Sylvia serves on two Boards of DirectorsHome of the Brave and Living Well Adult Day Care—furthering her impact in both healthcare and social empowerment spaces. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Sales & Marketing and is currently pursuing her Certification as a Dementia Expert, reflecting her ongoing dedication to lifelong learning and service.

A Legacy of Love and Leadership

Beyond her professional and advocacy achievements, Sylvia is a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She and her husband, Scottie, share a beautiful family that includes one daughter, three sons, and seven grandchildren. Her life is a testament to balancing family, business, and philanthropy with grace and determination.
