How are you making Black History today?
My business is my activism and how I am making Black History today. There are different levels of activism - there are those on the front line and there are those who are funding it, there are those who are educating and then there are those who are the caregivers and the support system.
I fall into the category of education and implementation through my integrated financial planning practice (www.TheMoneyPlanInc.com). Some of our greatest history makers grounded their principles in collectively pushing our communities forward by all going in the same direction of progressiveness. Represent the “We” and not the “I”.
Can you share a significant figure from Black History who has personally inspired you and why?
Madame C.J. Walker. Despite the fact that Walker's innovations were created over 100 years ago, her fearlessness and philanthropic spirit continue to inspire me. Not only was she a successful businesswoman, but she also recognized the importance of giving back to her community
For those who are also striving to leave a legacy, what advice would you share?
When building a legacy, you have to unapologetically lean into our values. Legacy doesn’t just happen, it takes extreme intentionality. Legacy is the sum total of your lifelong work, your wisdom, your learnings, your overall being that you can live on after your time on this earth. Financially there are tools that can truly help you transfer wealth - from well-designed life insurance strategies to estate planning, to properly crafted investments, to assets that retain value. There is freedom in creating a life where you don’t have to make decisions about what you will or won't do, say or not say because of money and you can deliberately pass this freedom down.
Then there are ways to share your narrative, your beliefs, and your hard lessons to help pass the baton to the next generation and your bloodline. Make it a part of your DNA to lean in and give those you love the beauty of choice.
What is next for you in 2024?
Our financial practice currently serves on a national level and helps people all across the US. In 2024, we are diversifying our service offerings and focusing on specialized areas in complex financial structures, tax efficiency strategies, and helping clients live a life of becoming work optional.
